Joint Efforts

Sponsored by the Johnsburg Lions Club and Walla-Pa-Looza

This week I am going to talk about community efforts. A few weeks ago, I mentioned that I was working on helping a teenage girl here in Johnsburg and with the families approval we are going to do just that. To give you a little back ground I have pulled some of the information from the Northwest Herald.

A little more than a month ago, 15-year-old Johnsburg High School sophomore Jessica Bertulis left the comfort of her home for a hospital about 40 miles away.

What started as back pain rapidly had become a much bigger problem.

“In late October my back started hurting, but I didn’t know why,” Bertulis said. “I thought my backpack was too heavy.”

Doctors initially thought Bertulis was experiencing muscle spasms, but when the pain increased even after physical therapy, she and her family knew something seriously was wrong.

On Dec. 7, 2010, Bertulis was taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. The next day, she was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, which had invaded her spine. Within two hours of the diagnosis, Bertulis was taken into surgery to remove the cancerous tumor from her spinal cord.

Bertulis spent five weeks at the hospital recovering. She has undergone chemotherapy and the surgery rendered her unable to use her legs.

So, with this information, I went to my friends in The Johnsburg Lions and discussed yet another opportunity to work together and they agreed, so here goes:

On March 19th Walla-Pa-Looza and the Johnsburg Lions are putting together an event at the Johnsburg Community Club. The event will have a similar feel to our Jolly-Pa-Looza event. We will have live music thanks to our friends in Bony Knees, Chad Miller and his incredible meat raffles, 50/50 Raffle and a silent auction. Please come out and support this local family.
You may have seen someone put up a quote from me on our Facebook page and it’s true:

“When you love where you’re from, you make sure to take care of your own. We are one huge family”

I would love to see you all at this event March 19th.

Craig
